Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Silver Surfer of the Year 2006

0 comments

The Silver Surfer Awards recognise the achievements of UK residents over 50 years old who have used the internet and email to make life easier and more fun for themselves and others. An associated award, the UK Silver Surfer Entrepreneur of the Year, is an award for someone who had developed a venture to 'Return to Work Through the Internet'.

A qualified nominee is someone who:

  • Overcame difficulties in order to learn (for example, through having a 'nontechnical' background, lack of confidence, financial or other disadvantage or disability), and yet can now use email/internet with enthusiasm and perhaps online features such as video, shopping and audio;
  • Is a wizard at making and distributing digital 'photos', using web cameras, participating in online events;
  • Created a website or helped others to do so;
  • Set up a business, or other work-related activity, that makes special use of email and/or internet;
  • Formed an email family group, support group or community group.

The cash prizes: £100 for the winner and £50 for each of the two runners-up.
