Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Buddies for Luv Project

The Buddies for Luv Project is a multi-media initiative by Patsime Edutainment Trust, a Zimbabwean non-profit organisation, designed for young people aged between 12 and 20 years to build their capacity around issues related to gender and HIV and AIDS. Through edutainment theatre, the project works to create a platform for young people to share their experiences, create gender-neutral spaces, and share knowledge that will contribute to the reduction of HIV infection, stigma, and discrimination in Zimbabwe.
Communication Strategies

The Buddies for Luv Project's edutainment approach involves a team of field officers who perform a scripted play and facilitate post-performance activities, including discussions on HIV and AIDS and related development issues such as child abuse and gender. The discussions are designed to be participatory, with students making use of illustrations such as drawings to express their real-life situations and experiences with HIV and AIDS and related development issues.

The programme also distributes information, education, and communication (IEC) materials. Patsime has produced its own IEC material for youth and schools and also collects and distributes other material from other organisations.

In order to address issues of sustainability and empowerment raised by various stakeholders including the schools and the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture, Patsime Edutainment Trust introduced Buddies Clubs in schools. The schools work in collaboration with Patsime to run the clubs, which initiate their own activities at the schools with one teacher or patron playing a coordinating role. These activities include, but are not necessarily limited to, theatre, sports, music, and dance. Patsime provides some financial resources for these clubs to support some of the activities.
