Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Guardian Achievement in International Development Award

The Guardian, in partnership with the United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development (DFID) and Marie Stopes International, invites public voting on nominees for The Guardian Achievements in International Development Award. They propose to recognise people who have made an impact by improving the lives of some of the world's economically poorest people. This award is for someone who has made a contribution directly through their own work or activities, or indirectly as a result of others using their achievements to improve lives (e.g. via technological inventions or agricultural research). People from all over the world are eligible.

After the deadline for nominations, a judging panel selects a short list of finalists, descriptions of which are featured on the Guardian website. Guardian readers and visitors to the website are invited to vote for the one they think most deserves the award. The public voting process runs from September 6-26 2010.

The winner will be announced jointly with the winners of the Guardian International Development Journalism Competition at an awards ceremony in London, UK.

  • The extent to which the nominee's activities and achievements have changed social situations, public attitudes, structures, or policies that may be behind the poverty, exclusion, or disempowerment of the people affected.
