Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Innocence in Danger - Global

Innocence in Danger is the code name for a programme formed in response to the Declaration and Action of January 1999 by UNESCO. It consists of partnerships of concerned citizens and organisations who are concerned with child safety on the Internet and who have organised action groups and sensitisation fora worldwide to reach those with expertise or resources who may contribute to making the Internet safe for children. A key aim of this project shared by all of the participants was to join forces, share information and resources and bring to bear each person's and each institution's unique expertise.
Communication Strategies

The creation of a website of information and contacts on child safety, preparation of education materials for children, parents and teachers, and advocacy to strengthen legislation on crimes against children were all activities of this project.
Development Issues

Children, child pornography, paedophilia, sexual abuse, Internet, education, partnerships
Key Points

It is noted that while only 5% f the world's children have access to the Internet, it is important to stress the dangers and take action now as preparation for children's entry into the Internet. These efforts are hoped to allow children to benefit from the Internet safely, while establishing rules that provide for this.
