Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Insight Malaria

This documentary, made by a team of 13 young people from Germany, Kenya, Uganda, Italy, Spain and Poland, examines the impact of Malaria on African countries. The group, all winners of a film-making competition organised by Stop Malaria Now!, travel through Kenya, visiting villages and speaking to families, health care workers, traditional healers, and village elders to find out how malaria affects their lives. The film examines all the myths, misconceptions, and urban legends around malaria, as well as the various treatments prescribed by traditional healers and health care workers. The film-makers also interview tourists holidaying on the east African coast to assess their malaria knowledge. The film-makers illustrate that despite its devastating impact on sub-Saharan Africa, many Africans and European tourists are still not entirely aware of malaria prevention, treatment, and impact. The film outlines some of the ways to avoid infection, such as the correct use of insecticide treated nets and the removal of stagnant pools of water that could become breading grounds for malarial mosquitoes.
