Metcalf Institute Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists
Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting, Rhode Island, United States (US) is accepting applications for its 15th Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists: Global Change in Coastal Ecosystems. The workshop runs from June 9-14 2013 at the University of Rhode Island (URI)Graduate School of Oceanography.
Metcalf fellows will work with scientists and regulatory experts in the field lab, and at the conference table as they consider research and policy on coastal environmental issues. Journalists learn how to interpret scientific publications and sharpen their investigative reporting skills.
Fellows at the week-long Metcalf workshop will:
• Explore the impacts of rising sea levels on salt march ecosystems.
• Conduct a fish trawl aboard the URI research vessel Cap’n Bert to study the impact of global change on commercially important fisheries.
• Study the effects of hypoxia in coastal waters.
• Learn how to measure emerging contaminants, potentially harmful chemicals that are not currently monitored or regulated by the EPA.
Early to mid-career journalists from all media with a demonstrated interest in science and environmental reporting and a desire to learn about basic science through field and lab work are invited to apply. The fellowship includes room, board, tuition, and up to US$500 to support travel, paid after the programme. Non-U.S. applicants must include a written statement indicating that they can secure full travel funds and obtain the appropriate visa.
