Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Philippines: Bird Flu Is a Children’s Concern, Says UNICEF

Summary

According to this article, children have a high-risk of contracting avian influenza, as they account for one-half of the reported cases and one-third of the reported deaths worldwide due to the virus. These statistics have prompted the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to educate Filipino children and adults about avian flu.

According to the article, UNICEF Philippines is embarking on an extensive advocacy campaign to increase awareness about bird flu. Funded in part by the Government of Japan, the campaign is intended to harness “extensive on-the-ground networks to deliver critical life-saving messages.” According to Nilo Yacat, an information officer from UNICEF Philippines, it is expected that by the end of the campaign: the Philippines will have an emergency communication plan in place; media reports on avian flu will have increased; and families in high-risk communities will have adopted bird flu preventative practices.
