Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Standing Women - Global Unity for a Better World

Standing Women is an initiative that galvanises women across the world to join together each year on the second Sunday in May to recognise the importance for all children of meeting basic needs such as safe drinking water, clean air, food for all to eat, access to education, adequate health care, and safety from violence.
Communication Strategies

This initiative draws on community mobilisation strategies - fueled by multimedia, interactive internet exchanges - to encourage people to gather in silence for a 5-minute-long silence in local parks, schools, churches, and other public places to promote a better world for future generations. The call to gather is posted, as of 2010, in 21 languages, on the Standing Women website, with the result being a 24-hour global wave of humanity. Guidance is offered: "Please stand at a different hour with a different time zone if 1 p.m. is not your preferred time. We ask you to invite the men who you care about to join you. We ask that you bring bells to ring at 1 p.m. to signify the beginning of the five minutes of silence and to ring again to signify the end of the period of silence. During the silence, please think about what you individually and we collectively can do to attain this world. If you need to sit rather than stand, please feel free to do so. Afterwards, hopefully you and your loved ones can talk together about how we can bring about this world."

The Standing Women website is intended to be a global community for sustaining the conversation about social change beyond each year's event, with features such as music, photos, a blog, and videos.
