This democratic evolution has been felt mainly in francophone West Africa, where countries like Senegal, Mali and Benin, initiated a liberalisation of airwaves and a less repressive judgement of the work of journalists. In spite of this development, most Anglophone countries doubted these new media outlets. Nigeria was still under military rule and Sierra Leone and Liberia were still involved in conflict.
