Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This toolkit provides a selection of 100 participatory learning and action (PLA) tools, which can be used for community mobilisation on HIV/AIDS. PLA tools are interactive activities, which enable communities and organisations to learn together about HIV/AIDS in their community, develop a plan, act on it and evaluate and reflect on how it went.

The 100 tools are organised in the following sequenced sections:
  • Overview of how to facilitate, plan, and train facilitators for using the toolkit;
  • Mapping for organising a community;
  • Time analysis tools to help the community plan for change;
  • Linkages and relationships to increase understanding of HIV/AIDS causes and effects;
  • Experimental tools for a deeper understanding of HIV/AIDS;
  • Prioritisation tools to help quantify and rank effects of HIV/AIDS;
  • Action planning tools for addressing causes and effects;
  • Training and organising tools for the community; and
  • Resources on PLA and HIV/AIDS.
The support information for each tool explains what it is, in what situations to use it, and how to use it. In addition, each tool includes facilitator notes. This resource can be used with groups that have low literacy levels.

The kit is available with a second resource, "All Together Now," that helps communities create the participatory organisation steps. These 100 activities plug into each step.
