Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Young Reporters Against Poverty

Young Reporters Against Poverty (YRAP), a competition for European college and university students passionate about journalism and development, is sending three students to Africa. Launched in September 2010, the contest called on students in journalism, communication, development, and political science to submit an article or radio broadcast on the European Union (EU) and external development aid. After the deadline on November 7, 33 finalists from 26 EU Member States were selected to attend and cover the European Development Days (EDD) in Brussels, Belgium, December 6-7 2010. An interactive, multimedia web platform served as a space for sharing the finalists' work.
Communication Strategies

This awards-based initiative used both technology and face-to-face interaction to build the capacity of aspiring journalists. In the two days preceding the EDD, the YRAP finalists received hands-on training to assist them in their live coverage. During the EDD, the students reported live from the event by uploading articles, radio reports, videos, photos, and Twitter updates on the YRAP website. (This website also features profiles of the 33 finalists and their posts, as well as links and other information). The YRAP reporters' coverage included interviews with development experts, reports from the Development Village (an exhibition that explored the world's key challenges through practical workshops), and features from the different conferences at the EDD.

After the EDD, the finalists had one week to perfect their best article/broadcast. A jury of professional journalists and journalism teachers from the EU Member States judged these final stories and selected winners in 3 categories: Best Written Article (Katie Davies from the United Kingdom), Best Radio Broadcast (Alba Málaga Homs from Spain), and Most Original News Reporting (Chiara Zappalà from Italy). The three winners will receive a press trip to one of the EU Delegations in Africa.
