Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
In November 2004, researchers, government officials and representatives of aid agencies met at Forum 8, the annual meeting of the Global Forum on Health Research. In a series of meetings and plenary sessions participants discussed what actions were needed to reach the health targets set by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This report, according to its author, "is a subjective account of some of the main discussion points at Forum 8." In the foreward to this document, Professor Stephen Matlin tells us that the report highlights several key messages that arose from these forum sessions, including the need for:
  • more political commitment
  • a wide interpretation of the agenda underlying the specific MDG targets...
  • more application of existing knowledge...
  • more health research of all kinds...
These points are highlighted through a presentation of topics and issues raised at the forum. These issues are grouped into 6 main categories, arranged by chapter:
  1. Poverty, the Foundation of Inequity
  2. Knowledge and Power
  3. Maternal and Child Health
  4. HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB
  5. The Changing Patterns of the Burden of
  6. Disease
  7. One Goal to Reach the Others
