Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

Seven posters are being presented in June 2012 at the C-Change Regional End of Project Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. The posters focus on various capacity strengthening efforts in Southern Africa including working with universities, participatory material development, and capacity strengthening tools implementation. Posters are due for publication on the C-Change website as an archive of knowledge gained from the development of social and behavior change communication (SBCC) materials for C-Change projects.

Brief descriptions of each poster follow:

1.   SBCC Capacity Strengthening (CS) Training Tools: Implementation, Indicators and Measurement Tools

This poster encapsulates C-Change work on the CS Tool Kit including: components; examples of long-term capacity building; preliminary results of its use; charts of the user cycle and a map of the 17 countries where the toolkit was used; statistics on its use in training and access for downloading; examples of application within a specific network; an example from the online C-Modules training, October 2011; and a sampling of adaptation of the module knowledge transfer.

Authors: Emily Brockh and Antje Benton-Becker, FHI 360; David Mould, Andrew Carlson, and Karen Greiner, Ohio University

2.    SBCC Centers of Excellence: Spotlight on University of the Witwatersrand

The effective engagement of adults in HIV prevention is the aim of the "The Community Conversation Toolkit on HIV Prevention: A Catalyst for Community Dialogue and Action" analysed in this poster. The poster lists the toolkit contents and the intentions of inclusion, as well as its process of development. It details the results - adaptation in 7 countries, publication in 10 local languages, and subsequent dialogue and actions taken. The lessons learned section summarizes community involvement outcomes and programmatic recommendations from partners, supported by a "voices and stories of users section". Finally, a next steps section details the external evaluation process in Malawi and Zambia.

4.    SBCC Centers of Excellence: Establishing SBCC Courses

C-Change collaborated with five universities to develop courses in social and behavior change communication (SBCC) at centers of excellence (CoEs). These contribute to the goal of developing a critical mass of individuals who can design, implement, and evaluate theory-and-research driven SBCC. This poster depicts the 7-step process of course development beginning with the choosing of institutions and ending with the evaluation of courses completed. It then details the results at four universities chosen as CoEs: University of the Witwatersrand (Wits),South Africa; University of Tirana, Albania; Universidad del Valle, Guatemala; and University of Calabar, Nigeria. Results include: faculty training; faculty exchange; both Master's degree and short courses; online courses; and communities of practice for collaboration, sharing resources, and guest lecturing.

Authors: Nicola Christofides and Sara Nieuwoudt, School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand (Wits); David Mould and Karen Greiner, Ohio University; Shereen Usdin, Soul City: Institute for Health and Development Communication

Describing work done to satisfy a need for communication tools tailored for MSM and SW in Namibia and Jamaica on HIV prevention and related topics, this poster illustrates 6 steps that resulted in materials now in use in those countries. Some of the materials are illustrated as examples on the poster. A list of resources, such as flip charts, leaflets, a comic book, card game, fact sheets, advocacy posters, a discussion cube, a cell phone ring tone and screen saver, wrist bands, and counselling cards, are either in use or in the testing phase of development.
