Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Global Forum for Media Development Advocacy Campaign Post2015

"[T]hose who are empowered to decide the SDGs - your governments and diplomatic representatives - sometimes forget how crucial and relevant information is, or they might feel threatened by media. We risk losing this opportunity if we let them decide to drop access to information and media from the agenda."

To increase advocacy for access to information, independent media, and freedom of expression in the United Nations post-2015 agenda, the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) has mounted an advocacy campaign which provides materials and recommended steps for carrying out a campaign in a number of countries.

The campaign website offers advocacy documents in English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian, and Portuguese. A coalition of networked organisations is available for membership. The following steps offered by the campaign site are:

  • "To join the coalition, sign our petition and put it on your website with the video;
  • Meet your Minister for Development and/or Foreign Affairs. Ask the government to support the goal of access to information and media to enable development;
  • Write op-eds and blogs;
  • Share your writings widely and work with your colleagues from the media sector;
  • Collect and share stories of impact with the GFMD for the campaign;
  • Find high profile 'champions' for GFMD to join the campaign.
  • Use our social media to share information and spread the message #mediadev #post2015 #SDGs:"


The campaign has developed a video (see below) available in Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and Russian. The video library includes other GFMD videos as well.  Web-linked and print resources are made available in a resource library.
