Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"Do you want to discover the universe that inspired the literary and journalistic work of Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel García Márquez?"

This is the question designed to motivate journalists who may be interested in applying to the Gabriel García Márquez Fellowship in Cultural Journalism, taking place March 11-19 2014 in Cartagena and Aracataca, two Colombian cities. The experience will draw on the themes of film and popular culture to strengthen the understanding and practice of cultural journalism, specifically the interview, extended reportage, and critical commentary. Fifteen journalists, editors, or reporters who cover cultural themes with an emphasis on film will be selected. They must be fluent in English, with a minimum of 3 years of journalistic experience, working or publishing in print or digital media. 5 places will be reserved for Colombians, 5 for Latin Americans, and 5 for journalists from other continents.

Offered by Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI) and the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, the experiences will be divided into 2 modules, each of which will be approached with the methodology that characterises FNPI workshops: "practical work and conversation provokes professional exchanges in an atmosphere of camaraderie and informality":

  1. Popular Culture: March 11-12 2014, a visit to Aracataca.
  2. Film: March 13-19 2014, during the Cartagena International Film Festival.

Both modules will be coordinated by FNPI teacher Héctor Feliciano and the journalist Jonathan Levi, from the United States (US). In addition, each module will include guest experts, both national and international. There will also be discussions with A.O. Scott (US), New York Times film critic, Fernanda Solórzano (México), Letras Libres film critic, Alberto Salcedo Ramos (Colombia), and Jean-François Fogel (France).

In addition, there will be virtual sessions via Skype to tackle topics related to digital journalism with two teachers from FNPI.

The spoken sessions will be held in English, which requires that all participants have a working knowledge of the language. In cases when the sessions are held in Spanish, there will be simultaneous translation. It is expected that all Fellows, in addition to the work they do as part of the workshop, will write and report for their own home media outlets about the cultural events that they attend during the workshop. Fellows may write in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

The participants will not have to pay a registration fee for this activity. They will also receive the following financial support: international medical insurance during the term of the fellowship, accommodation in a single room during the term of the fellowship, round-trip ticket (economy class), working materials, press credentials to access the film festival, and refreshments daily, a welcome dinner, and a farewell dinner.

This project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of The Cartago Foundation, the Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI), Red Assist, and the support of the Organization Ardila Lülle (OAL).
