A number of awards and funding opportunities with deadlines between June and September of 2004 are listed below. AWARDS

1. The Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health

Recognises committed leaders and their contributions to public health resulting in region-wide improvements in the lives of the peoples of the Americas.

Deadline: May 30 2004

2. Journalism Award for Juvenile Justice in Kazakhstan

The Soros Foundation is awarding a total of $3000 to Kazakh journalists who shed light on the problems of young people in the country's criminal justice system.

Deadline: May 31 2004

3. Barcelona International Television Festival VIII

Acknowledges television programmes that have had a positive impact on children's media. Several awards are presented including the "UNICEF Prize", which is given to national (Spain) and international productions that, through their ethical and humanitarian values, children's rights tolerance, human rights, solidarity, education, social sensitivity, ecology, etc., foster content in the world of children's television.

4. New Statesman New Media Awards 2004

Acknowledges those who recognise the potential of new media technology and also have the commitment and drive to bring about their goals and the stamina to see a good idea deliver real benefits for its target community.

5. Frederic Bastiat Prize for Journalism

For writers whose published works promote free markets and free societies, and their supporting institutions. The prize, a total of USD $10,000, will be awarded to one or more authors.

Deadline: June 15 2004

6. Television & Young People (TVYP) at Work

Places 12 18-21 year-old delegates in employment and administers a training and mentoring programme at leading production companies. Companies include Endemol Entertainment UK, Five News, Tiger Aspect, Wark Clements, RDF and Brighter Pictures.

7. Co-operative Young Film-Makers 2004

Recognises young film-makers under the age of 21 years who have made films about the environment or human rights issues, films tackling ethical subjects or "those that take a sideways look at something that's grabbed the headlines".

8. The Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature

Promotes the highest standards of public health research and emphasises impact across the Americas. The nominated article must have been published in a scientific journal that is listed in the Index Medicus or in an official PAHO publication.

Deadline: June 30 2004

9. Global Junior Challenge

Celebrates ICT-based educational innovation and promoting co-operation, shared learning, and e-inclusion in the build up of a knowledge society for all. Working together for a better world, for equal opportunities and against the digital divide is central to spirit of the Global Junior Challenge. The sum of Euro 30,000 is available to be awarded to projects from developing countries.

Deadline: June 30 2004

10. 2004 Manuel Velasco-Suarez Award in Bioethics

Recognises excellence in the field of bioethics. The award is intended to encourage young scholars in Latin America and the Caribbean in the development of their capacities for bioethical analysis. The award consists of a certificate of honour, a grant of US$10,000 and a paid trip to Washington, DC.

11. International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management

Supports the planning, evaluation and implementation of water-related projects with the aim of promoting sustainability and "encouraging the efficient use of this precious resource". Conferred annually, the ReSource Award is worth USD $100,000 in total and is granted to one or several projects.

Deadline: August 31 2004

12. The Reuters - IUCN Media Awards

Recognises outstanding environmental journalism that raises global awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues. The global winner of the competition, selected amongst six candidates representing Asia, English-speaking Africa, Europe, French-speaking Africa, Latin America, and North America & Oceania, receives a cash prize of USD $5,000.

13. The 2004 National Population Cartoon Contest

Awards USD $9,000 total to cartoonists who have best portrayed the relationship between human population growth and issues affecting the quality of life. These issues can include environmental degradation, poverty, biodiversity, urban migration, food and water supply, energy, maternal and child health, status of women, and national conflicts.

Peer Review Health Communication Resources at Health e Communication!

A collaboration between the Health Communication Partnership and The Communication Initiative - Health e Communication, an online resource, is designed to grow and evolve as practitioners from around the world submit and review case studies, planning models, research and evaluation documents, and lectures and speeches.

FELLOWSHIPS

14. Native American Journalists Association Professional Development Fellowships

Provides fellowship funds that may be used for tuition expenses, fees for travel and lodging related to attending journalistic skills building seminars or classes.
Fellowship funds may also be used for one-time, job related equipment purchases.
Native American journalists who are current members of NAJA (Native American
Journalists Association), non-students, and those who have been working journalists
for at least 2 years are eligible for fellowships of up to USD $500 (Jun 1) and USD
$1000 (Jan 1).

Deadline: June 1 & January 1 - annually

15. Canadian International Development Agency Fellowship

Offers five Canadian journalists each year an opportunity to travel to a developing country to conduct research and broaden their understanding of international issues. Provided by the The Canadian Association of Journalists, recipients will be offered a "first-person" experience acquired through visits to development projects and interaction with the people of developing countries.

Deadline: July 1 - annually

16. Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

Provides a six-month working fellowships for non-U.S. print journalists from developing and transitional countries with an emerging free press. The Fellowship covers all costs of programme-related international and domestic U.S. travel, and provides a monthly stipend.

Deadline: September 1 2004 - annually

17. Scholar Rescue Fund Fellowships

Provides fellowships for scholars whose lives and work are threatened in their home countries. The fellowships permit scholars to find temporary refuge at universities and colleges world wide, enabling them to pursue their academic work and share their knowledge with students, colleagues, and the community at large.

Radio soaps turning threats into positive outcomes?

A series of "radionovelas" broadcast by Radio Sahlom and sponsored by Alternative Development Program (ADP) in Peru has been so successful that the radio station, producers, and actors are getting anonymous death threats. The Coordinadora Nacional de Derechos Humanos asked to meet with the producer and the principal actor of the radio drama when the media in Lima talked about the threats they received by the coca growers in Tingo Maria. ADP wants to know if there is any experience dealing with turning this situation into something positive. Has any radio soap opera elsewhere in the world been able to turn threats in their favour by publicising them to discredit the people who make the threats?

GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS

18. Global Fund for Women Grants

Supports women's groups outside the United States that advance the human rights of women and girls by providing small, flexible, and timely grants ranging from $500 to $20,000 for operating and project expenses.

19. Fulbright Scholar Awards in AIDS & AIDS-Related Research

Provides 3-9 month grants to academics and professionals in all disciplines to conduct research in area of specialisation one country or in two or three countries for 5 - 9 months. Preference will be given to proposals that focus on AIDS and AIDS-related problems as they impact Sub-Saharan Africa, involve collaboration with scholars from host countries and include plans for seminars, workshops and research dissemination in the host country or countries.
