1. Peace Bond Design Contest
Features artwork from around the world that promotes and advocates for peace and non-violent conflict intervention. Winners will receive international recognition and a trip to Washington, DC for an award presentation and exhibition. There are two categories - Students and Adults. A small fee is required for Adult entries.

2. Nansen Refugee Award
Recognises an individual or group whose dedication to, support for and personal interest in refugees has been demonstrated by an innovative approach to refugee protection or a courageous deed involving personal self-sacrifice that made an exceptional contribution to refugee causes. The Award consists of a medal and a USD $100,000 monetary prize.

3. Developing Asia Journalism Awards
Based on journalists' published works during 2005, the award acknowledges Asian and Pacific print journalists who cover development trends and the impact these have on the countries and people of the region. Winners in four different categories will receive a monetary award as well as a trophy or certificate of recognition, and the top finalists will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Manila for the award ceremony and dinner in early April 2006.

4. Best Practices in Global Health
Highlights the efforts of people dedicated to improving the health of disadvantaged and disenfranchised populations - particularly children - and recognises programmes that demonstrate the link between health, poverty and development. A person, programme or initiative selected for this award must be able to demonstrate measurable results in the field, as well as the ability and expertise to share, inspire and extend best practices for improving health.

5. Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life
Offered by the Women's World Summit Foundation, the Prize aims to draw international attention to the laureates' contributions to sustainable development, household food security and peace, thus generating more recognition and support for their projects. 20 or more prizes of USD $500 each will be awarded to honour creative and courageous women and women's groups around the world for their contributions to improving the quality of life in rural communities.

6. Rodos International Films and Visual Arts Festival Ecofilms Prize
Recognises documentary, short and feature films with environmental and ecology themes, particularly those dealing with conservation issues and issues related with the natural, the human and the built environment. Prizes are awarded to films for their innovative approach in conservation issues, for their daring proposal in subject matter and their artistic qualities overall. Cash awards range from 7,000 Euros to 3,000 Euros and the two audience awards are coordinated by the Rodos Cinema Society.

7. CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2006 Awards
Open to professional African journalists and freelancers working on the continent. There are 16 prizes for different categories including coverage related to HIV/AIDS, the environment, and economic development. Category winners will receive a state-of-the-art laptop computer with modem and printer and a cash prize, and from these 16 winners the judges will award the grand prize.

8. Courage in Journalism Award
Honours full-time, part-time or freelance woman reporters, writers, editors, photographers or producers who have demonstrated extraordinary strength of character in pursuing their profession under difficult or dangerous circumstances - including physical danger, government oppression, political pressure or other intimidating obstacles. The prize is USD $5,000 and a sculpture symbolising freedom and courage. Up to 3 recipients will be recognised in ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

9. Prix Ars Electronica 2006
Recognises the use of computers as a medium for implementing and designing creative projects that blend art, technology and society. Categories include: computer animation / visual effects; digital musics; interactive art; net vision; digital communities; u19 - freestyle computing; and the art and technology grant.

10. Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) Awards
Recognises reporting on the environment by journalists internationally for work that has appeared in newspapers, magazines, newsletters, online services, radio and television between March 1 2005 and February 28 2006. A USD $1,000 prize is awarded in each of nine categories.

11. Tech Museum Awards
Honours and awards innovators - individuals, for-profit companies, and not-for-profit organisations - from around the world who use technology to benefit humanity in the categories of: education; equality; economic development; environment; health. Five Laureates in each category are honoured and one Laureate per category receives USD $50,000.

12. Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health
Recognises committed leaders and their contributions to public health resulting in region-wide improvements in the lives of the peoples of the Americas. In addition to the recognition of professional accomplishments, the award aims to call attention to health concerns throughout the hemisphere, and is intended to inspire continuing achievements in region-wide health by professionals. The awardee receives USD $5,000, a certificate of honour and a paid trip to Washington DC, U.S.A.

13. WACC Photographic Competition 2006
Invites submissions of photographs interpreting the theme of The Media and People. The competition winners will be announced on World Communication Day, May 8. A selection of entries will be exhibited in London and will be used in the WACC publications such as the website and the journal 'Media Development.' There will be one first prize of USD $500 and five commendations of USD $200 each.

14. Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism
Recognises independent and professional reporting that sheds new light on controversial issues. The stories can focus on conflict, human-rights concerns, cross-border issues, or any other issue of controversy in a particular country or region. Two USD $5,000 prizes are awarded each year, one to a local reporter in a developing country or nation in transition, and the other to a freelance journalist covering international news.

15. New Voices National Fellowship Program
Aims to bring innovative, fresh talent to the staff of organisations and to cultivate and strengthen the leadership potential of professionals in the U.S. entering fields related to human rights and social justice. New Voices Fellows are offered financial assistance, training, and other opportunities for personal and professional development. Host organisations are provided salary-support grants.

16. Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health
Sponsors U.S. print, television, radio and online journalists to research and report on US health policy issues. Stipends will be awarded based on the length of the fellowship - up to $50,000 for a nine-month fellowship. The programme also covers expenses - such as travel costs and computer equipment - based on the needs of the project.

17. Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship Programme
Supports social entrepreneurs who seek to leverage technology-based solutions in the interest of humanitarian, educational, and sustainable development goals. The Reuters Foundation and other programme partners will award approximately a dozen full-time fellowships, covering all Stanford University fees and expenses. Living stipends may be available for fellows accepted from developing world countries.

18. Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Scholarship Fund 2006
Offers an opportunity for young journalists from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America to report on proceedings of the United Nations for news media in their home countries. The Fund expects to award three or more fellowships in 2006 and will provide round-trip airfare to New York; modest accommodations; health insurance for the duration of the fellowship; and a daily allowance to cover food and other necessities.

19. Rosalynn Carter Fellowships For Mental Health Journalism
Provides journalists from the U.S., New Zealand, and South Africa grants to journalists to study topics related to mental health or mental illnesses. Fellows are encouraged to select topics that are unique and creative. Projects may educate the public, raise awareness, and inform other journalists in the field. Every year, six U.S. fellows are awarded stipends of $10,000 USD each and in 2006-2007, two Southern African Fellows (Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe) will be awarded R50,000 each.

20. UNESCO Fellowships Programme in Support of Priority Programme Areas (2006-2007)
Offers support for short-term programmes to candidates who are promising and qualified specialists seeking to undertake advanced research or to upgrade their skills and knowledge of state-of-the-art developments in their field of study or work. Priority programme areas are education, sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information. Priority attention will be given to women, and those from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The maximum amount provided is USD $15,000.

21. United States Conference of Mayors: HIV Prevention Grants
Provides funding to strengthen local capacities to carry out HIV/AIDS prevention activities. Proposals will be accepted for implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention services for Native Americans, and prevention services for African American or Hispanic women at high risk. Grants totalling approximately USD $740,000 will be awarded to local health departments, non-profit community-based organisations, and Native American tribes/nations for implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention projects.

22. Sexuality Leadership Development Fellowship (SLDF)
For young African professionals to explore theoretical and practical dimensions of sexuality. A few highly competitive, fully-funded scholarships are open to qualified residents of Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa to cover tuition fees, post-fellowship grant, roundtrip travel expenses as well as accommodation, meals and incidental expenses.

23. World Community Grid
Invites public and not-for-profit organisations to apply to use its grid technology at no cost for projects that benefit humanity. Research projects that benefit from grid technology are those that perform computations that require millions of computer processing units (CPUs) and that can be divided into smaller independent computations.

24. Reaching Communities Grant
Provides funding for community development projects in England that aim to help improve local communities and the lives of people in need, especially those that respond to needs identified by communities and actively involve them, particularly those that include people or groups who are hard to reach. The minimum grant is £10,000, and the maximum is £500,000.

25. Fresh Ideas: Community-Based Approaches To Improve Care for Vulnerable Populations
Funds new community-based approaches to health and health care problems in the U.S. and its territories that intersect with social factors - such as inadequate housing, poor education and poverty, particularly projects that serve hard-to-reach individuals and families. Grants up to USD $300,000 for up to three years in duration are currently available.

26. Visiting Scholar in Feminist Perspectives on Globalisation
Offers highly qualified researchers working on issues of globalisation from a feminist perspective, from developing countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, the opportunity to spend a research term in Ottawa based at one of the two universities. For the year 2006-2007, an English-speaking scholar is sought to be based at the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women's Studies at Carleton University.

27. Press Now Fund for Moroccan Reporters
For funding to help them complete special reporting projects that are relevant to and contribute to debate on issues in Moroccan society. The maximum scholarship amount is 5,000 Euros (about USD $6,070) per journalist, covering a period no longer than three months.

28. Native Leadership Scholarship (NLS)
Creates educational opportunities for women around the world who are grassroots leaders, organisers and activists demonstrating financial need. Scholarship recipients enroll in programmes of study that cover a range of human rights and development issues at the non-doctoral graduate level including gender, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, child exploitation, human and drug trafficking, infant and maternal mortality, microbial diseases, conflict resolution, environmental justice, global fair trade, agroecology, and sustainable development. Four to six scholarships are awarded per year, up to USD $25,000 per academic year for a maximum of two years.
